(Music)Daylan:(Intro) Good evening lets get started can you tell me a little bit about your personal and academic background
Nolan : Well I was born in Jackson, Mississippi I atteneded Jackson State University in Jackson and Ive taken my Bachelors of English from Jackson State from there I went to Southern Law Center in Baton Rouge where I obtained juris doctorate degree
Daylan:How do those backgrounds connect with New Orleans
?
Nolan:Well my background began connecdting with New Orleans by way of my da, my fathers family is from New Orleans so I spent alot of my summers and many holidays feeling visiting some family here in New Orleans .
Daylan: What did you learn ablout New Orleans while traveling with your dad
?
Nolan: one of the first things I learned is that New Orleans was very much different from where I was from in Jackson Mississippi and I later found it to be very much different than any other place I had visited or lived. The culture is totally different the people, the music, the food and that was the first thing that I noticed about the difference between New Orleans and where I grew up .
Daylan: What made you choose Southern?
Nolan: I chose Southern because I wanted to attend a HBCU, attending Jackson State as a undergraduate. I really enjoyed that experience at a HBCU and Southern was in Baton Rouge which was not to far from where I grew up so it was close enough from home but far enough to home that I felt like I was able to get away from home , something that I wasn't able to get there as a undergraduate because I stayed in Jackson
Daylan: What was college life like at Southern, was there a culture change?
Nolan:There was very much a culture change Id alswars heard that in Lousian that you worked hard but they partied hard thats one of the first things I noticed that the party culture was a lttle bit diffrent from where I grew up so thats one of the first things that I noticed that along with he diffrent foods and the music and the people I found them to be much more colorful
Daylan: Did the parting affect your studies ?
Nolan: early on it did there was a adjustment I have to admit that probably that first semester I probably partied a little more than I should have, but after that intial two or three months I buckled down and I got to bussiness
Daylan: So what dove you to work in New Orleans and how was the adjustment?
Nolan: When I finished law school I needed a job and I was in baton rouge but I reallyly wanted to live in a city so I moved to New Orleans and I had a bfriend who just recommend on a whim that I apply to the Disctric Attorneys Office and also you know in law school I had no idea I wanted to be a prosecuter so I went ahead and appled and got an interview and after getting the interview I was off at the job and within two or three weeks of working at the district attorneys that I realized that I loved it and thats what brought me here to New Orleans.
Daylan: How do you think your job impacts the community?
Nolan: My job has a very much great impact on the community, Im a criminal prosecuter so I work firsthand very very closely with some of the biggest problems that the city has so I work everyday to make New Orleans safer place.
Daylan: NOw that you adjusted, why do you call here home?
Nolan: I call New Orleans home becasue I love it, I left for a short priod of time and it really took that time away from the city for ,me to realize that theres not place like it and I really longed for coming back here so I came back her at the first oppurtunity that I had and I loved it ever since
